One of the rarest large whales on Earth, clawing its way back from the brink one calf at a time.
IUCN Red List: Critically Endangered (uplisted from Endangered in July 2020, population trend then decreasing). The 2020 assessment cited fewer than 250 mature individuals and an ~15% decline since 2011, with 26 of 30 confirmed human-caused deaths between 2012 and 2016 caused by entanglement (IUCN, 2020).
The most recent count is more hopeful. NOAA and the North Atlantic Right Whale Consortium estimated 384 individuals (+10/-9) alive at the start of 2024, released October 2025, a 2.1% rise over the recalculated 2023 figure of 376. This is the third consecutive year of slow growth after the population bottomed out at roughly 358 in 2020. Even so, only about 70 reproductively active females remain (NOAA Fisheries; New England Aquarium, 2025).
A migratory baleen whale of the western North Atlantic. It feeds in spring and summer in New England waters and increasingly in the Gulf of St. Lawrence off Canada, then migrates south each winter to calve in the warm coastal waters off Georgia and northern Florida, the species' only known calving ground.
As a large baleen whale filtering vast quantities of copepods and other zooplankton, the right whale is both a barometer of ocean health and a nutrient engine: its feeding and defecation cycle nutrients through the water column, and its carcasses, when they sink, deliver enormous pulses of carbon to the deep sea. Losing it would remove a keystone grazer from an already stressed North Atlantic ecosystem.
The two killers are human. Entanglement in fixed fishing gear (especially crab and lobster pot ropes) and vessel strikes drive an ongoing Unusual Mortality Event declared in 2017. Since then at least 46 whales have been confirmed dead or seriously injured by entanglement alone, and scientists believe the true toll, counting unobserved deaths, is closer to 100 (NOAA Fisheries). Climate change compounds both: warming seas have pushed the whales' copepod prey north into the Gulf of St. Lawrence, where the animals encounter unregulated shipping lanes and dense crab-pot fisheries. With so few breeding females, every preventable death is significant.
NOAA Fisheries leads U.S. protection under the Endangered Species Act and Marine Mammal Protection Act. Its Vessel Speed Rule requires vessels 65 feet and longer to slow to 10 knots or less in Seasonal Management Areas, a measure NOAA estimates cuts strike mortality risk by about 90%. That rule is now contested: NMFS opened a 2026 rulemaking to "modernize" and potentially loosen the seasonal speed limits in favor of technology-based measures, with a public comment period that ran through June 2, 2026 ([Federal Register](https://www.federalregister.gov/documents/2026/03/04/2026-[code postal]/advance-notice-of-proposed-rulemaking-to-amend-the-north-atlantic-right-whale-vessel-strike); NOAA Fisheries). Research and advocacy are anchored by the New England Aquarium (which maintains the right whale photo-identification catalog), the Center for Coastal Studies, the Marine Mammal Commission, and groups such as Whale and Dolphin Conservation and IFAW, alongside Canada's dynamic fishery- and shipping-closure programs in the Gulf of St. Lawrence.
The latest news is genuinely good. The 2026 calving season produced 23 calves, the most since 2009 and the fourth-highest count on record, and NOAA reported no detected right whale mortalities in 2025. Encouragingly, 13 returning mothers calved on a roughly 3-to-4-year interval, close to the healthy norm rather than the recent 7-to-10-year stretch that had alarmed scientists (NOAA Fisheries, 2026 calving; Mongabay, May 2026). Recovery is real but fragile: with ~70 breeding females, the species cannot absorb a return of high vessel-strike and entanglement mortality.
